Keep Writing No Matter What

Crazy days here in Colorado. There's a wildfire twenty miles west of here, causing evacuations for many of my friends. Last week I put my two daughters on a plane to New York City, where they'll work for the summer. And on Monday, what was supposed to be a minor pre-cancerous skin removal turned into a ten-centimeter, 15 stitches scenario.

It's easy to get distracted and forget about writing. But Rachelle Gardner's post yesterday reminded me that writing should be 90% of what I do writing-wise (with platform-building getting the other 10%).

And this image on Facebook this morning is a wake-up call for those ready to give up.

From "Exceptional Living" on Facebook.
So today is a writing day. I'll rework the first chapter of one of my manuscripts to send off to a writing conference scholarship contest. How about you? What are you working on today? What's keeping you from wanting to?

Note: check out Kenda Turner's wonderful post today about the same idea, very motivational! Check out Restart the Engine: Revving up the R's.

  1. I'm ashamed to say that I've been very lethargic when it comes to my writing. I was trying to organise stuff for my application to graduate school... but I think that will have to wait. There's really no excuse for my slacking off. I shall fix it...

    ... tomorrow.

  3. Hi, Debbie:

Sorry to hear about the stitches and I've said a prayer asking for your speedy recovery.

Thanks for these FB images. I can't believe how many times these visionaries were turned down. It's a testament to perseverance!

    Be well. Happy summer!

  4. BTW, the first link you posted above worked for me, but the R. Gardner one did not. Just a heads up! :-)

  5. Thanks for your prayers, Janette! I'm sure a few days of rest will get me there. I tried the link just now and it worked for me, but maybe I'll check on another computer to be sure. Thanks for letting me know!

  7. Love the facebook quotes, and I've got to get over to Rachelle's post and see what she says. All of this and reading what you're going through reinforces what I've been telling myself, too, that I've got to keep moving forward even if things are difficult. In fact I did a pep talk to myself my last post about something similar...Thanks for your pep talk!

And I thought of you recently when hearing reports of Colorado's fires, wondering if you were affected. Hope all your friends are safe...

  9. Janette, I'm glad you got it working!

Kenda, I was the one most in need of a pep talk!

Michelle, thanks for your sweet wishes, and for letting me know you're reading. You guys make my day.

  10. I heard there are heaps of fires around the Phoenix area too, not that that's relevant to Colorado, but just sayin'... Hope everyone is safe!

  11. Debbie--thanks so much for the link back to my post! Appreciate it :-) Pep talks seem to help. I got a query out yesterday, and I'm back to character sketches for current WIP. Hooray. Hope others are inspired to keep going, too.

  12. I do hope they contain those fires soon. One day last week, we couldn't go outside due to the smoke and we are FAR away from them. Sorry to hear about the extra stitches. I need to read Gardner's post. I've been doing more writing (and homework) recently and like 1 percent blogging, etc. :)

  13. Oh my! I'm sure you were more than happy to put those children on a plane. Wow! Fires are so scary. Be careful. And the surgery, well...just glad that got it all. You do have a plateful and yet you stay focused. I've been spending too many hours on trying to market my book. Actually, I need to re-focus and stay on task with my writing. I tend to jump around and waste time.
Keeping you in my prayers girl. Great post!

  14. Stacy, I'm always impressed with your dedication! Hopefully the cooler weather will help the fires get under control. I hate to smell smoke and wonder how close it is.

Leah, thanks for your encouraging words. Some of my summer renovation projects have had to take a backseat, but there's always writing! Best of luck in your marketing efforts!

  15. Trisha, one thing that really worries us is an arsonist who has set at least 20 fires in the last couple of days. He's still at large. Scary.

Kenda, you're so welcome. Your post was so encouraging. Best of luck with your submissions!

  17. Thanks Julia. I'm feeling better, but yesterday another fire began much closer to us. More challenges to trying to write!

  18. I'm impressed with your powers of concentration. Hope the new fire gets dealt with quickly. And that your daughters have a great time in New York!

  19. Unfortunately, there's a decent chance we may have to evacuate. A couple blocks away, the area is on pre-evacuation notice. It all depends on the wind direction. Thanks for your thoughts!
